Re-fresh Global wins 2024 Refashion's Innovation Challenge

Re-Fresh Global is a sustainable materials company based in Berlin, that uses patented and proprietary biochemical processes to transform textile waste into high-quality materials at scale.

The raw materials include nanocellulose – Re-Nano™, ethanol – Re-Thanol™, and disinfected textile pulp – Re-Sanpulp™. The patented process separates cellulose from synthetic fibers through enzymatic hydrolysis.

A WORD FROM THE CEO

"The fashion industry has a major problem: most of the waste it generates is mixed, and it's extremely difficult to separate”.

Viktoria Kanar, CEO & Co-founder of Re-fresh Global

PROJECT'S "OPEN & CLOSED LOOP" OBJECTIVE

Use of the innovative biotechnological process for the separation of natural fibers from synthetic fibers in post-consumer textile waste with a high conversion rate, in a reproducible model.

TYPE OF CHF COVERED: Cotton/polyester clothing textiles

RECYCLING STAGE: Chemical  recycling

RECYCLING PROCESS: Enzymatic hydrolysis

APPLICATIONS: Packaging/Cosmetics industries and Yarns/Non-wovens

OUTPUT PRODUCT: Microfibrillated cellulose and synthetic fibers

Financial support from Refashion:

100 000€

Project duration: 18 months

The project in 3 steps

  1. Preparation of cotton/polyester textile feedstocks (collection/sorting/tearing)

  2. Testing of the enzymatic hydrolysis process to separate natural fibers from synthetic fibers

  3. Filtration and characterization of output products (synthetic and cellulosic fibers)
