In 2024, 65.8 kt of TLC were sold second-hand, representing 7.4% of total TLC consumption volumes. This represents an increase of 3.5% compared to 2023.
Data from the study confirms that second-hand is becoming a permanent fixture in textile consumption in France. Another indicator of changing consumption habits is the substitution rate for new products, which reaches 31% among second-hand product buyers.
Towards Greater Valorization of Second-Hand
Despite promising momentum, several obstacles continue to slow the development of the second-hand market:
- Insufficient collection and donation volumes preventing scale-up
- Deterioration in perceived quality of available stock and competition from second-hand with entry-level products
- Insufficient sorting capacity and quality
- Still significantly underdeveloped second-hand sales standards
The study calls for a genuine paradigm shift: it's no longer simply about selling second-hand, but about building a desirable, structured, and large-scale offering.
This involves:
- High-performance sorting that identifies, classifies, isolates, and directs products according to their market value
- A segmented and valorized offering that embraces a commercial business model
- A customer experience as qualitative as that of new products
