Analysis: what is eco-design?

Eco-design is a global approach that seeks to reduce the environmental impact of your products at every stage in their life cycle.

To achieve this, you can focus on:

  • Materials and components choices,
  • Durability,
  • Repairability,
  • Product recyclability, notably by avoiding components that disrupt recycling such as electrical or electronic components, and metalloplastic fibres.
  • Adopting new business models, such as the usage economy, preferring rental over sale.

To reward your efforts in eco-design, we have put in place an eco-modulation system based on:

  • Bonuses for durability, environmental labels and the incorporation of raw recycled materials,
  • Penalties for products incorporating recycling disruptors: electronic and/or electrical components, and metalloplastic fibres.

Why should you get involved?

Eco-design should no longer be the exception. Why? Because it reduces environmental impact.

If we analyse the environmental footprint of a garment and its raw materials, we can see that the production process is responsible for*:

  • 15% of its impact on global warming,
  • 30% of its impact on ecosystems,
  • 31% of its water consumption.

This underlines the importance of selecting materials with a low environmental impact.

What are the benefits for your business in practical terms?

  • You showcase your products by positioning them as more virtuous. This can help you differentiate your brand and build a stronger image.
  • You can gain eco-modulation bonuses to help you finance your eco-design initiatives.
  • You strengthen your quality and CSR strategy with in-depth knowledge of your products.
  • You can include quantifiable data and commitments in your extra-financial reporting.
  • You can confidently plan for future regulations on recyclability, the inclusion of recycled materials and many other aspects.

Improve your impact materiality and make it visible!

Why include eco-design in your reporting?

  • Eco-design is a highly effective way to limit the environmental impact of products throughout their life cycle,
  • It is also a strong differentiating factor for your business, against a backdrop of new regulatory requirements and greater market expectations.

Develop your materiality analysis to reflect extra-financial reporting requirements (CSRD, VSME, etc.).

  • Communicate transparently on your key data: number of eco-designed parts, eco-modulation bonus received, reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, etc.
  • Present your eco-design practices (use of raw recycled materials, design for reparability, labelling), your policies (if they exist and are in the public domain), and your upcoming initiatives.
  • Also use the Waste prevention and eco-design plan that you sent to Refashion in order to structure your commitments and make them more visible. It is a legal requirement for compliance and must be reviewed every five years.

Eco-design improves your ESG performance, reduces your environmental impact and paves the way for new business opportunities. So why wait?
